In Victorian England, renowned palaeontologist Mary Anning (Winslet) scours the southern coast of Lyme Regis collecting fossils and shells to sell to tourists. When Roderick Murchison (James McArdle), a wealthy visitor from London, offers to pay her to look after his ailing wife, Charlotte (Ronan), Mary is unable to turn him down.
