Three major texts in Sufism are considered: \u003ci\u003eKitāb al-Ṣidq\u003c\/i\u003e by Abū Saʿīd al-Kharrāz, \u003ci\u003eTafsīr\u003c\/i\u003e \u003ci\u003eal\u003c\/i\u003e-\u003ci\u003eQur\u003c\/i\u003eʾ\u003ci\u003ean\u003c\/i\u003e \u003ci\u003eal\u003c\/i\u003e-\u003ci\u003eʿAẓīm\u003c\/i\u003e by Sahl al-Tustarī, and Al-Tirmidhī’s \u003ci\u003eKitāb Sīrat al-Awliyāʾ\u003c\/i\u003e. Together, these sources highlight the doctrinal aspects of \u003ci\u003ewalāya\u003c\/i\u003e, exploring the identity, function, appointment, and description of those considered ''\u003ci\u003ewalī''\u003c\/i\u003e.
