It was a period in which several important essays appeared, but perhaps the most intriguing is one that has previously neither been accredited to him nor reprinted: ''Can Socialists Be Happy?'', written under the pseudonym, John Freeman.  Four ''London Letters'' were contributed to \u003ci\u003ePartisan Review\u003c\/i\u003e.  \u003ci\u003eThe English People, \u003c\/i\u003ethough not publlished until 1947, is included in this volume.
