They took part in Operation \u003ci\u003eWeserübung \u003c\/i\u003e(April–June 1940), the German invasion of Norway, during which they sank the aircraft carrier HMS \u003ci\u003eGlorious \u003c\/i\u003eand her escort destroyers \u003ci\u003eAcasta \u003c\/i\u003eand \u003ci\u003eArdent\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003ci\u003eScharnhorst \u003c\/i\u003ealso sank HMS \u003ci\u003eRawalpindi \u003c\/i\u003ein November 1939. In early 1943, \u003ci\u003eScharnhorst \u003c\/i\u003ejoined the \u003ci\u003eTirpitz \u003c\/i\u003ein Norway to intercept Allied convoys to the Soviet Union. On a sortie from Norway to attack a convoy, the German force was intercepted by British ships and during the Battle of the North Cape (26 December 1943), HMS \u003ci\u003eDuke of York \u003c\/i\u003eand her escorts sank \u003ci\u003eScharnhorst.\u003c\/i\u003e Most of her crew was lost.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is the most comprehensive examination of \u003ci\u003eScharnhorst \u003c\/i\u003eever published, drawing on new research and technology to tell the full story of the ship.
