Linus Roache and Tom Wilkinson star in this British drama directed by Antonia Bird. When Father Greg Pilkington (Roache) arrives in Liverpool, he is shocked to discover that his new colleague Father Matthew Thomas (Wilkinson) has disregarded his vow of celibacy and is conducting an affair with his housekeeper Maria (Cathy Tyson). Pilkington is plagued with self-doubt regarding his own personal conduct, finding it difficult to square his own homosexuality with his religious beliefs. This conflict becomes more urgent when his relationship with a young man is made public and he discovers that a member of his congregation is abusing his daughter, but is bound from intervening by the sanctity of confession. The cast also includes Robert Carlyle, Christine Tremarco and Robert Pugh.
