Jerzy Kawalerowicz directs this Polish historical epic based on the novel by Boleslaw Prus. When young Rameses XIII (Jerzy Zelnik) becomes Pharaoh, he dreams of reforming Egypt and achieving greatness. When he wages war on the expanding empire of Assyria in order to preserve Egypt's dominions, he encounters opposition from the high priest Herhor (Piotr Pawlowski), who has secretly signed a peace treaty with the Assyrians. As his conflict with Herhor escalates, the future of Egypt is jeopardised. The cast also includes Leszek Herdegen, Barbara Brylska and Krystyna Mikolajewska.
