Patricia Arquette and Gabriel Byrne star in this supernatural horror directed by Rupert Wainwright. When it comes to God, Pittsburgh hairdresser Frankie Paige (Arquette) is a firm non-believer. However, soon after she receives some rosary beads as a gift, she begins suffering from stigmata - bleeding wounds on her hands correlating with those suffered by Christ on the cross. Father Andrew Kiernan (Byrne) is sent to investigate by the Vatican and although he is initially dismissive, he gradually comes to believe that Frankie is carrying an important message for mankind. However, Kiernan's corrupt superior Cardinal Houseman (Jonathan Pryce) wants Frankie silenced and he is prepared to go to extreme lengths to achieve this.
