Burt Lancaster directs and stars in this Western about a man from Kentucky who embarks on a difficult journey to start a new life in Texas with his young son. At the first town they stop at, Big Eli Wakefield (Lancaster) is caught in the middle of a long-running family feud and is arrested by a corrupt lawman. After escaping with the help of Hannah (Dianne Foster), an indentured servant, he runs afoul of the whip-wielding Stan Bodine (Walter Matthau) and must decide if he will continue his journey. The cast also includes John Carradine, Diana Lynn and John McIntire.
