Spencer Tracy stars as the benevolent Dr Jekyll, whose experiments in releasing the evil impulses within himself result in him drinking a potion that transforms him into the sadistic and beast-like Mr Hyde. At first Jekyll enjoys his secret identity, which gives free rein to his baser impulses, including the seduction of local barmaid Ivy (Ingrid Bergman). But when Jekyll is given consent to marry his real love, Beatrix (Lana Turner), he decides to give up his secret identity - only to realise that it is too late.
