French silent drama written and directed by Jean Epstein. Four fishermen come together on an island off the coast of Brittany to harvest seaweed and burn it so that they can sell the ashes later for profit. When the two younger men, Ambroise (Ambroise Rouzic) and Jean-Marie (Jean-Marie Laot), fight after Ambroise breaks Jean-Marie's only bottle of wine, Ambroise cuts his thumb on the glass. The wound soon becomes infected but the conditions make it difficult for them to leave to get him the help that he needs, placing his life at risk.
