Paul Verhoeven directs this East German fantasy based on the fairy tale by Wilhelm Hauff. Peter (Lutz Moik) lives in the Black Forest with his mother and earns money by selling charcoal. He dreams of marrying Lisbeth (Hanna Rucker) but is ridiculed by his fellow villagers for imagining that this could ever happen. Seeking to improve his circumstances, he asks a forest spirit for help and is granted two wishes but when these fail to have the desired results, he pursues a darker path which comes at the cost of his heart and his happiness. The cast also includes Paul Bildt and Erwin Geschonneck.
