Cynical Chicago journalist Frank Quinlan (William Hurt) is sent to investigate reports of an angel living in Iowa. His boss (Bob Hoskins) insists that he takes along angel expert Dorothy Winters (Andie MacDowell), but when they meet their celestial interviewee (John Travolta), he turns out to be an overweight, slobbish winged being. Frank is ordered to bring Michael to Chicago, but over the course of their journey Michael's charm begins to convert even Frank into believing that miracles can happen.
