Juraj Herz directs this Czech drama based on the novel by Jaroslav Havlicek. Stepa Kiliánová (Iva Janzurová) is a brave and independent woman who dreams of finding love and happiness but no one in her small town believes she would make a suitable wife. She agrees to marry her cousin Pavel (Petr Cepek), a former soldier burdened with debt and syphilis, but their marriage is unconsummated and Stepa is left full of disappointment and regret. The cast also includes Marie Rosulková, Ota Sklencka and Karel Chromík.
