American comedy directed and co-written by Billy Wilder starring James Cagney. C.R. 'Mac' MacNamara (Cagney) is an ambitious American advertising executive based in West Berlin determined to gain promotion as the company's new head of European operations in London. However, Mac's chances of promotion are hindered when the boss Wendell P. Hazeltine (Howard St John)'s daughter Scarlett (Pamela Tiffin) visits Berlin and under Mac's guardianship she marries a communist from East Berlin named Otto (Horst Buchholz). In order to rectify the situation Mac attempts to contrive a new identity for Otto that will meet with his boss' approval. But will this be enough to help him get the London job?
