James Cagney stars in this classic 1930s US crime drama directed by William A. Wellman. In 1900s Chicago, childhood friends Tom Powers (Cagney) and Matt Doyle (Edward Woods) rise from the city's slums to become fearsome gangsters. The pair start off by carrying out petty crimes and selling their goods to criminal Putty Nose (Murray Kinnell) but when Prohibition arrives in 1920 they move into the more lucrative business of bootlegging, working for Paddy Ryan (Robert Emmett O'Connor) and Samuel 'Nails' Nathan (Leslie Fenton). However, with their new power and wealth, the two men attract unwanted attention from rivals wanting to take their place at the top.
