Kon Ichikawa directs this Japanese drama set at the end of WWII. Private Mizushima (Shôji Yasui) is the harp player for Captain Inouye (Rentarô Mikuni)'s regiment. They have been fighting in Burma but when they come across a group of British soldiers, they learn that Japan has surrended and the war is over. A small band of Japanese soldiers are fighting nearby and a British captain asks Mizushima if he can convince them to surrender and save their lives. However, they refuse his entreaties and are killed in the ensuing attack. In the aftermath, Mizushima disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and embarks on a journey to promote peace whilst also burying the dead Japanese soldiers he encounters as he travels. The cast also includes Kô Nishimura, Jun Hamamura and Taketoshi Naitô.
