This book presents the first results of the excavation of a terp at Wijnaldum in the province of Friesland (the Netherlands).
The excavation, which was carried out as a joint venture by the University of Groningen and the University of Amsterdam from 1991 till 1993, was the starting point of an interdisciplinary project on Frisia Magna in the first millennium AD. In this period Frisia became an important factor on the political stage and the focus of international trade in Northwest Europe. As this book will show, Wijnaldum was one of the cradles of this political and economic growth. It also shows that the cultural heritage of the great days of Frisian history is severely threatened in parts of the terp region.
