William Wyler directs this 1970s neo noir drama starring Roscoe Lee Browne as wealthy funeral director L. B. Jones. Seeking a divorce from his much younger wife Emma (Lola Falana) on the grounds of alleged infidelity, Jones approaches local lawyer Oman Hedgepath (Lee J. Cobb) to ensure he retains his fortune. When his wife's lover, policeman Willie Joe Worth (Anthony Zerbe) tries to persuade Emma not to contest the divorce, she refuses, determined to take enough money to retain her extravagant lifestyle. When conflicts arise, bodies are buried and the desire to avoid public scandal becomes a distant memory.
