Collection of two Polish dramas written and directed by Andrzej Zulawski. 'The Third Part of the Night' (1971) is set in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II. Michal (Leszek Teleszynski) witnesses the massacre of his family by German soldiers and his subsequent guilt and experiences are explored through multi-layered symbolism and apocalyptic imagery. 'The Devil' (1972), banned by the Polish government upon its release, is set during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 1790s. Jakub (Teleszynski) is imprisoned on charges of conspiracy and treason but is freed by a black-clad stranger (Wojciech Pszoniak) who sends him home with Zakonnica (Monika Niemczyk), a white-clad nun. Tasked with providing a list of conspirators to the stranger, Jakub travels with Zakonnica across the country and they bear witness to a multitude of horrors in this parable of the fight of good against evil.
